Liu Scholars receive highly competitive IDRC Doctoral Research Awards

In the recent International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Doctoral Research Awards competition, Liu Scholars won four of 28 grants awarded across Canada. The awards provide support for students to undertake thesis research in developing countries, and are intended to promote the growth of Canadian and developing-country capacity in research on sustainable and equitable development from an international perspective. Congratulations to Emily Anderson, Sara Elder, Magdalena Ugarte, and Sule Yaylaci!

Bill Clinton declassified the data, which includes geospatial coordinates for thousands of bombing runs, in 2000. The information would make it easier to find and dismantle unexploded ordinance.

Chelsey Hauge, a PhD student in the Dept. of Language and Literacy Education (LLED) at the Faculty of Education has won an all-expense paid Digital Media and Learning Institute scholarship at Microsoft Research New England to participate in a Summer Institute, “Thinking In and Out of the Box: How Innovation and Policy Shape Networked Learning.” This one-week institute, hosted by social media superstar, danah boyd, is designed to support the development of junior scholars working in digital media and learning. Microsoft Research New England, located in Cambridge, is an emerging destination for scholarship in social media.

BC researchers looking for a long-term solution to energy poverty

Researchers in British Columbia are looking for a solution to a problem affecting nearly half the planet’s population: the lack of clean burning cooking fuel. They presented their work at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. About 2.5 billion people worldwide rely on burning wood, agricultural residues or animal dung for cooking and another half a billion rely on burning coal. The World Health Organization estimates that two million people die each year due to the indoor pollution. Scientists are looking for ways to get people to switch to using cleaner cookstoves. “We’re fundamentally talking about households having to make choices to get new technologies,” said Hisham Zerriffi, with the Liu Institute for Global Issues at UBC. “That’s a complex decision because if you’re a household using biomass, you might be collecting that biomass for free.”

Limited access to clean sources of energy, known as energy poverty, makes nearly half the world’s population reliant on burning wood, animal waste, coal or charcoal to cook. This leads to severe respiratory diseases that kill roughly two million people worldwide each year, a problem University of British Columbia researchers are trying to solve.
