The Global and Transnational Ethnographies Research Network brings together an interdisciplinary network of qualitative researchers with interests in the politics, ethics, and practice of research in transnational settings. The network seeks to generate dynamic and lively discussion about the relationship between politics and method, linking the “how” of transnational research practice to the “what” and the “what for.” It also provides the opportunity for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty across disciplinary spaces to share innovative techniques and practices concerning the conduct of field research in a range of transnational contexts.
The network will host a range of activities at the Liu Institute including:
- A joint annual public lecture co-sponsored with the Departments of Anthropology, Geography and Sociology on the theme of “Border Crossings: Interdisciplinary Explorations of Transnational and Globalization”
- A research working group on the theme of “Transnational Praxis” that discusses key readings in various disciplines and shares experiences about the dilemmas and possibilities of conducting transnational field research
- Graduate seminars and workshops on research design and practice in transnational settings
Research Network Organizers:
- Jennifer Jihye Chun, UBC Department of Sociology
- Jamie Peck, UBC Department of Geography
- Alexia Bloch, UBC Department of Anthropology
