Rohit Mujumdar is a first year doctoral student at the School of Community and Regional Planning and PhD Scholar at the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia. His research explores the politics of peri-urbanization in Mumbai Mega-Region, India, in the context of the ongoing efforts of India’s neo-liberal state towards rapidly urbanizing 300 million people. He hopes to bring to light the dynamics of peri-urban habitats which escape the dominant approaches of state policies and plans to peri-urbanization in India.

Rohit has completed graduate studies in architecture (2001) from Mumbai University and Master’s in Urban Planning (2007) from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. Prior to commencing doctoral studies, he has taught at the K. R. V. Institute for Architecture, Mumbai and has co-founded Collective Research Initiatives Trust (CRIT), which is an extra-curricular space for critical investigations in urbanism in Mumbai. His has recently researched on the state-social movement dynamics in the implementation of Special Economic Zones in Maharashtra, India. He has also presented his work on Mumbai’s contested landscape at the exhibition titled What makes India Urban: Challenges towards Mobility, Infrastructure, Energy, Perceptual Change organized by AEDES Gallery, Berlin (2009).
