Vancouver - The Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia is commemorating the one million lives lost in the 1994 Rwandan genocide by inviting students and community members to participate in a drum circle, Wednesday, March 31st at 12 pm, on the north side of the UBC Student Union Building.
Last month the House of Commons of Canada declared April 7th as a Day of Remembrance to encourage Canadians, including the government, to take appropriate steps to commemorate the genocide and reflect upon its lessons.
A series of events for the anniversary are taking place throughout Vancouver in tribute to those who were killed in the genocide ten years ago. The One Million Drumbeats Memorial Project will also include speakers and a drama performance.
The Remembering Rwanda 10th Anniversary Memorial Project is a global initiative to commemorate the 1994 genocide, raise international awareness and recognition, and document and educate to preserve the memory of the victims and those who tried to assist them.
